At the coffee house, Daniel makes it clear to Jennifer that they are on separate paths. He doesn't see them being friends. He thinks it is best if they politely ignore each other going forward. Jennifer tries one last attempt to stop Daniel from being taken in by Nicole. She plays the family card. She accuses Daniel of not being sensitive to his family, Maggie and Melanie. Daniel abruptly tells Jennifer that Maggie and Melanie are in his life and that she is not. When he turns to leave he curtly bids a "Goodbye Jennifer" to her.
Daniel goes to see his Mom. He tells her that what he tells her is confidential, especially when it comes to Jennifer. He also tells her that he and Jennifer are no longer friends. Maggie is sad to hear of that outcome. Maggie tries to justify her actions, but realizes she has overstepped her bounds. She apologizes to Daniel and tells him she loves him.
Back at the hospital, Daniel overhears Jennifer quarreling with coworker, Anne. Jennifer is so angry she slams her hand down on the counter, it results in pain. Daniel sees that she is hurting and approaches her to take a look. After their recent conversation at the coffee house, Jennifer is apprehensive to let him look at it. But, Daniel sets aside their previous differences and steps in with his Dr. Jonas hat on to examine her hand. They both relax and joke about their first date that landed them in the emergency room. They both laugh, unaware that distraught Nicole is watching.
